Rowhome Design

arch 104 (studio 2b)

Both homes were designed with the artist in mind. The same design applied to two different lots employed different use and organization of space. One home serves as the gallery house for exposition, and the other home serves as the studio house for creation.

The courtyard atrium is the heart of both houses and serves different purposes in each home. In the gallery house, the circulation surrounds the centralized courtyard allowing natural light to flood the entire home. The courtyard in this home serves as an event space with pneumatic pavers that can be raised and lowered to provide seating, a pedestal for artwork, and various other purposes. In the studio house, the courtyard abuts the neighboring party wall. It serves as a place of tranquility, escape, and inspiration for the artist. A white marble waterfall, angled to reflect sunlight, flows into a koi pond that spans the length of the courtyard. Both houses have folding glass doors along one side of the courtyard to open the home to this space.
